The NEW Onixan site!

Even though we're still under much heavy construction, formulating the site hasn't been an easy task but it was kind of enjoyable seeing it come to life just like a sketch. This much needed over haul has been a long time coming so we're very pleased to be updating it little by little on a daily basis.

So once we're fully opened we'll announce it so you guys can check out all the new artwork that we've been cranking out through this long downtime.

San's ARMATA

One of Onixan's flagship titles is Steven Sanchez Armata. A creator owned concept since 1999 San has been working on and off this project that began as a funny short and has bloomed into one of his personal focuses of his career in art. Taking spurts of time to jump back and fourth creating this project was no easy task as life and work are priorites but the final feeling of gaining all this ground was worth it.

San's script is in its final stages and he's about to tackle the short story first. More news on this as it becomes available.

STORYBOARDING

STORYBOARDING

Not many comic production houses storyboard their idea's out, although thumbnailing is a form of storyboarding but still not the same as when one does thumbnails you'd have to revamp an entire page to fit things a certain way.

With regular storyboards focus on just one panel can be a time saver. Scripts are we also what we use as well to have a little more freedom in creating. Lots of companies use the comic book style of scripting a panel by panel description which is fine to formulate the whole issue but still not enough room to play with ideas when at times a writer can be a bit controlling. More on that as we post more blogs ;)

Micron Pigma Pens

Tools Of The Trade

Well, these are just a few tools we use. Markers ROCK and when you use's for designs they just make things ever so smoother! We get this question asked a lot. What do we use to ink? Easy, ball point pen, kidding, it's mainly A Micron Pigma, and what type of pencils we use? Well, it varies as it can be either mechanical or traditional, depending on the mood.

Prisma Color Markers

It all boils down to preference. Light or dark lead, stuff like that. A kneaded eraser can be very helpful as well. All these items can be found at your local art supply shop or Office supply store like Staples. Remember, don't be afraid to try any type of art tools, if it gets the job done, it's the right tool for you! ;)

COLOR CODING

Color Coding

Color coding is pretty essential specially when you kind of want to begin the project right knowing the basics of your own characters. So you need to find out their colors to get yourself moving along with your project.

Changes are sometimes made during a project to of course make the final look better but it could also be story related as well. Small points but good to know. Colors can also aid in storytelling. How so? Well, if you color code your project just right you can use the subliminal messaging technique to feel how the story itself shifts. One can use Blue for the hero and red for the villain. I know, it's typical but that's a good way to really visually understand how to play with the story. It's fun figuring it all out. Try it and see for yourself ;)

NINJA 51 MORE DESIGNS!

The Ninja 51 designs are coming in pretty fast from Noel's sketchbook. Here's just another sneak peek into the design sense of Noel's mind.

Even though many of these designs might not be used in the final concept of the creation it's always a blast to see the world of the N51 come to life through draft pieces. Noel's newer final images will be a treat to post, just a few more and we can finally release the overall look of the characters! More to come, stay tuned ;)

The ARMATA Designs

So designing is pretty much an integral part of pre-planning in any project. Here's just a few of MANY character designs San has cranked out for Armata. Getting in a particular mind set for character design can be a little hard at times since it's a new project you really want to impress as much as one can. But when you have fun with your own style, it's like playing with toys, you just enjoy the process of just doing it.

Notes also help with this process to make sure you don't forget the little things that make up that character. Free forming gesture aids in opening up the imagination to more possibilities of what certain characters are able to do. So when designing, Go Nuts! Also, don't forget to have FUN!

The NINJA's ARE COMING!!!

YES! It's FINALLY Friday again! Seemed like only last week it had been the same day - RIM SHOT! Hoooo….

Okay, so what's with the corny jokes? I'll tell ya see, We're stoked that Noel Torres & Kermit Gonzalez are working for a better future!

A future of finally getting the Ninja51 story wrapped up and ready for FULL Production! That's right, these hips don't lie! Wait, wrong line… These photo's don't LIE! I'm here all week!

So spending a few years in the pre-production stages on N51 was fun and very long in seeing what these aliens would look like we think it was all well worth the wait. We're currently working on colorizing them which is no easy task when Noel cranks out tons of pages.

Yes, he's a total work horse. We've included a sneak peek of one of the design pages along with a small write up of the project. Hope this jazzes you guys up to want to see more. It's a fun filled story with tons of cool new creations from these guys. Cya ya next week guys and have a safe weekend!

A Look Into Coloring

The coloring process of how we go about it. Well, it's no secret how anyone colors images these days, from PhotoShop to ArtRage to even hand painted good ol' water coloring and even markers. It's all mainly about the hard time put into each piece that makes it great. This Blog isn't meant to be a tutorial site but we think it's okay to talk about the process in which artist get their point across.

The Onixan guys all have their own styles of digital coloring, Scott Shoemaker rocks his in a nice grungy style as Mike Henry enjoys the finer painted look while San has a mixture of painted and old school shiny tones. All ways are just fine. Finding your own particular style just takes hours of practice and enjoying other works to be influenced by their tonal values. Life all around us is probably your first place to get influenced by as color tones are everywhere and you can learn very quickly just by observing carefully.

Take your time and enjoy the coloring process as many do tend to want to become professionals over night and as bad as you may want it sometimes, it's always good to try and understand and respect the process first. Onixan Project: Ninja51

Onixan Productions Presents A Kermit L. Gonzalez and Noel C. Torres creation for Onixan Productions

Ninja51 began as a little short story spoof project about these little underdog alien beings trying to be top fleet Alien invader warriors. Some how years later it had became a full out onslaught storyline with over 120 pages of script.

lol - That's the wonderment of writing something FUN I guess. N51 began with some pretty rough basic sketch designs by San seen over on at http://onixan.deviantart.com

- The real fun began when Noel ramped off from those quick designs into some of the quick pics you see posted here. We'll be leaking more pre-production images later down the line this year but for now gnaw on these till supper is ready ;)

San's ARMATA

We hope EVERYONE had an AWESOME New Year's guys :)

Well, to kick off the New Year with some NEW BLOGS we're gonna start it off with San's ARMATA! A little over ten years in the making but it was all due to perfecting characters and story and that's what Onixan is all about. The story will follow 4 robotic girls into a deep story arc which contains information about their past and why
the planet survived such a hugh destruction over two hundred years prior.

Now bound to a New Earth and culture they strive to revive one of their counterparts that didn't awake and to aid in taking down what caused such a
horrible catastrophe.

Much of the story isn't mentioned in the above mini synopsis as there's to be a lot more character driven area's but it all boils down to the classic good vs evil theme we all know so well... We hope :)

Onixan Brief History Part 2

... Okay, so where was I? Oh yeah, the brief onixan history, well lets see, San and Pat Carlucci had done their 1st Orlando Mega-Con in 2004, Kermit was one of the guys waiting in San's long line of commission takers and after Kermit followed an around the con like a stalker the K-Man decided he wanted his commission inked and thus blah blah blah.... Okay, now Scotty was also introduced at this show as he was running around with puppets shooting his Stupid Sci-Fi stuff... No, it's not an insult, that's the actual name to the show. Stupid Sci-Fi :)

They got to do a quick interview with San and well, we still hope to see that video pop up one day ;) A few month's later the Onixan guys began to form and by 2005 we had been established as an official crew. 2006 rolled along and we all met Noel Torres @ the FX Show, another convention in Florida.

We're now beginning our next chapter in "As The Onixan Turns" ;)

Introducing: The Sanchez

Let's kick this off with one of the Onixan guys. Who's Steven Sanchez? What? U don't care!? Well you just have to since he's the founder of Onixan and has been hard at work on this production house since 1999. Oh, we'll get into the other artist soon enough. History is pretty important and we need to insure it's not forgotten.
So here's a brief look back as Onixan's main history will be told on the main site once it's done. San began playing around with a back up studio ever since the two other studio's he use to be apart of kind of tanked. A bunch of young rebel artists seeking glory and fame in this industry of entertainment. Sound familier? To many of you younger guys this is what you seek and sometimes the day dreaming blurs together with reality making a huge mess mentally and then the focus is completely lost. Hey, it happens. But in the end you have to slap yourself and come back to reality. That's what happened with many of the old crew back in the days. Some cared, some didn't some even made it ti the big times.
Some just reformulated and focused more on building a good brand and taking story creation very seriously. That's what Onixan is mainly about. Focusing on brand and enjoying the process along the way. So what was next? San had to build his skills up, work hard staying up late nights and learning new parts of everyone elses jobs, from writers to inking, the works! As they say, that's how you take the bulls by the horns. Oh, but it doesn't stop there. Years invested and friendships made to build Onixan was just the beginning. Next came the projects. In our next blog update we'll jump into knowing the other crew members of Onixan. Kermit L. Gonzalez, Scott Shoemaker & Noel Torres.
